5 July is the world day dedicated to the most popular swimming costume in history: the bikini.The invention of this revolutionary garment is due to the French fashion designer Louis Réard. It was precisely on 5 July 1946 that he held a fashion show at the Molitor swimming pools in France.

Casino de Paris dancer Micheline Bernardini volunteered to walk the runway in his creation. Micheline was the only one to wear the bikini, as it was too provocative and scandalous an outfit for those years. Thanks to that 'courageous' gesture, the two-piece swimming costume is now 76 years old. Since then, the bikini has been enriched with ever new and fashionable shapes, colours and patterns.
